Should My Child Attend Pre-K or ABA Therapy? (Sometimes the Answer Is Both)

When your child is between the ages of 3 and 5, you’re often faced with big decisions — and one of the most common questions we hear is:

“Should my child go to Pre-K or do ABA therapy?”

The short answer? It depends on your child. And in many cases, a thoughtful combination of both Pre-K and ABA can be ideal.

Understanding the Purpose of Each

Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K):
Pre-K programs are designed to help children build foundational school readiness skills — like following routines, interacting with peers, and participating in group learning. Many are structured as part-day programs through public schools or community centers.

ABA therapy:
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is individualized, evidence-based therapy for children with autism or developmental delays. At Expectations Reimagined, we offer a play-based, naturalistic ABA model that supports communication, emotional regulation, and social skills through meaningful interactions.

When ABA Might Be the Better Starting Point

If your child is experiencing a delay in language skills, finds group activities challenging, or needs support with transitions, behavior, or sensory needs — ABA may be the most supportive and appropriate starting point.

We often work with families whose children aren’t quite ready for the demands of Pre-K. Through ABA, we help them build the skills they need to succeed in that environment — in a setting that’s warm, flexible, and developmentally appropriate.

And Sometimes, Both Can Work Together

For some children, a hybrid schedule is the sweet spot. They might attend a half-day Pre-K program in the morning, and then participate in ABA therapy in the afternoon — or vice versa. Our team can help design a schedule that supports consistency while respecting your family’s routine.

And we off parent coaching and coordination with local schools and childcare centers when needed, and we love partnering with families to create a balanced, individualized plan that works.
